A spooky Halloween red velvet cake with rich cocoa flavor, tangy cream cheese frosting, and gory red drip effects.

Ingredients

  • 1 cup unsalted butter (softened)
  • 1 ¾ cups granulated sugar
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • ⅓ cup Dutch-process cocoa powder
  • 1 tsp baking soda
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 1 cup buttermilk
  • 1 tbsp white vinegar
  • 2 tbsp red food coloring (gel)
  • 2 batches cream cheese frosting

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 350°F and prep pans.
  2. Cream butter and sugar until fluffy.
  3. Add eggs, vanilla, then beat again.
  4. Mix dry ingredients and add half.
  5. Add buttermilk, vinegar, and food coloring.
  6. Add remaining dry ingredients and combine.
  7. Pour into pans and bake 25–30 mins.
  8. Cool and level cakes.
  9. Frost and stack layers.
  10. Decorate with blood drips and spooky toppings.

Notes

  • Use gel food coloring for intense red color.
  • Chill layers before frosting for clean lines.
