Halloween Candy Apples – spooky, glossy, and crunchy Granny Smith apples coated in candy for a festive Halloween treat.

Ingredients

Scale

8 large Granny Smith apples

3 cups caster sugar (600g / 1 ⅓ pounds)

⅓ cup water (80ml)

¼ cup liquid glucose or light corn syrup (60ml)

1 teaspoon white vinegar

Food colouring of choice (red, black, or orange)

Optional decorations: sprinkles, candy eyes, edible glitter, crushed cookies

Instructions

1. Line a large baking tray with baking paper and set aside.

2. Wash and dry the apples thoroughly. Remove stems and insert sticks or skewers.

3. Add sugar, water, glucose, and vinegar to a heavy-based saucepan. Heat gently, stirring until sugar dissolves.

4. Increase heat, attach candy thermometer, and boil until the mixture reaches 150°C / 302°F (hard crack stage).

5. Remove from heat, stir in food colouring, and allow bubbles to settle.

6. Dip apples carefully into the syrup, turning to coat evenly.

7. Quickly dip in sprinkles or decorations before the coating sets.

8. Place apples upright on prepared tray. Let set for 20 minutes until fully hardened.

9. Wrap in cellophane for gifting or enjoy immediately.

Notes

Best eaten within 2 days. Store at room temperature in a cool, dry place. Avoid humidity as it makes candy sticky.
